Rodolfo Mendoza-Denton is awarded the Chancellor's Award for Advancing Institutional Excellence
For the past ten years, the Chancellor's Award for Advancing Institutional Excellence (CAAIE) has been presented to UC Berkeley faculty who have an extraordinary record of accomplishment in promoting diversity while advancing equity and inclusion through their scholarship, research, teaching, and public or university service.
It is my great pleasure to announce the recipient of this year’s award: Rodolfo Mendoza-Denton, Richard & Rhoda Goldman Professor of Psychology.
Professor Mendoza-Denton passionately embodies the spirit of the CAAIE through all aspects of his academic work, as well as his efforts to foster an equitable and inclusive climate on our campus. He is a pioneering scholar and public intellectual on issues of intergroup relations, stigma, prejudice, and inequity in educational contexts. His research has had broad impacts not only in his own field of psychology, but also across a variety of academic disciplines, and among the general public. As an award-winning teacher and mentor, Mendoza-Denton has transformed the lives of countless students through the courses he teaches and the extensive support he provides to a large and extraordinarily diverse group of undergraduates, graduate students and GSIs. Over the past 13 years, he has also made tremendous contributions to the university through his involvement and leadership on a wide range of diversity and equity efforts, including two new campuswide climate initiatives for students and faculty; several high-level projects supporting diversity in STEM fields; and our Undergraduate Initiative, among others.
Professor Mendoza-Denton plans to dedicate the $10,000 CAAIE award grant to enhancing diversity and inclusion on campus through support for graduate and undergraduate students who are pursuing Psychology research consistent with the spirit of the CAAIE award.
I am proud to work with Rudy Mendoza-Denton, and to have the opportunity to present him with this year’s Chancellor’s Award for Advancing Institutional Excellence. Please join me in congratulating him on this achievement.
